kala collective: consultancy and services in Indian arts
Film and Documentary Screenings top of page In May 2006 Kananda screened the original black and white version of the classic 1961 Indian film, Mughal-e-Azam at the Guardian Hay Festival FilmFour Cinema. A pre-screening introduction was given by broadcaster, novelist and journalist, Jameela Siddiqi. For many in the audience, it was their first experience of Indian cinema, and their response was enthusiastic. Many stayed behind after the screening to chat to Jameela, and we have since been given positive feedback from the family of the Director of the film, K Asif To arrange licences and screenings please contact info@kananda.com Documentary, Shorts and Animation
Working closely with the Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT), New Delhi, Comet Media, Mumbai and the Short Circuit, Mumbai, Kananda is able to make available new and cutting edge shorts, documentaries and animations by young and up and coming Indian directors. Contact info@kananda.com for more information. Kananda encourages a participatory approach to South Asian film, and is interested in the many artforms, especially music and dance, which can be showcased by a film production. We are therefore enthusiastic about our work at arts and music festivals, and have created formats which combine live music and dance with on-screen film and visuals. This format is being incorporated into our Bombay Picture Palace venue, and can be adapted to accommodate venue and requirements.
In 2005 we took part in the vibrant Children’s Festival in Bolsover, Derbyshire, organised by Junction Arts and Fleet Arts. We showed a selection of classic ‘Bollywood’ shorts within a dynamic context of classic dance, music and performance.
We are currently devising a touring event - Becoming Bollywood - which will combine the screening of extracts from classic Indian film with live performance. Jameela Siddiqi will guide the audience through a history of Indian Cinema, interspersed by live performances from classical dancers and musicians.
